Donald Campbell was a compulsive record-breaker on land and water
in the 1950's and 1960's. Whenever Campbell tried for a
record, his mascot Mr Whoppit went with him. Together they broke the water speed
record seven times, reaching 276MPH in 1964. In that year they also broke the
land speed record in Australia with 403,1MPH. But on January 4,1967 the luck
runs out. On Coniston Water in England, a new record was in sight with an
outward run of 290MPH. But tragedy struck on the return run when Bluebird's
noise lifted, and with Campbell and Mr Whoppit she then plunged into the depths
at 300MPH. No trace was ever found of Campbell. Mr Whoppit survived and floated
to the surface a few minutes after impact. Mr Whoppit career did not end there.
Campbell's daughter Gina continued the record-breaking tradition her grandfather
Sir Malcom had started, and Mr Whoppit became her mascot. |
