Delicatessen, alias Aloysius

Aloysius, Original AlysiusPeter Bull's most famous teddy bear, is an early American bear, made in 1907 by Morris Mitchom's Ideal Toy and Novelty Company. He spent fifty years languishing on a shelf in Ladd's dry goods store and delicatessen in Maine. After the owner had seen the actor Peter Bull on TV, promoting his new book "Bear With Me" she sent him the bear to add to his collection. Peter Bull immediately christened him Delicatessen after the shop where he had spent so many dreary years. bridesheadIn 1977 Granada TV bought the film rights to Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited. When filming began, a suitable teddy bear was required to play the part of Aloysius, Sebastian Flyte's teddy. Peter Bull, with his stage connections and teddy bear collection, was an obvious source of recruitment and Delicatessen landet the part. Once the epic television serialisation of the book had been shown around the world, the bear became so famous that his name was changed to Aloysius. He is a much travelled bear. After Peter Bull's death he resided for a while at the Teddy Bear Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon, then returned to the USA to join the Volpp's famous collection. But now he is back in Britain, reunited with his soul mate, Peter Bull's miniature bear Theodore. They are now both by Mr Ian Pout in his famous teddy bear shop "Teddy Bear of Witney".

1981, "House of Nisbeth" made the first teddy, which his model was Aloysius. The bear called Young Bully Bear.

1984, the North America Company made a teddy bear his shining example was Aloysius, but he looked very different.

Delicatessen

1987, "House of Nisbeth" had made a small size replica from Delicatessen. The replica was approx. 35 cm tall and looks like the real Aloysius with his many hand sewn, leather patches and his nice scarf.

1998, Merrythought made 63 cm tall replica. This actual size mohair replica faithfully resembles the original, with his many hand sewn, chamois leather patches. Limited edition of 5000, made exclusively for Teddy Bears of Witney.
