The way to visit the Tower of London in style is to arrive by riverboat along the River Thames from Westminster. Then you can join a tour led by a Yeoman Warder (known colloquially as a Beefeater), who have traditionally lived in and guarded the buildings. The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror within the old Roman city walls and was used as the state prison. Today you can’t find prisoners in the Tower of London but you can find the impressive Crown Jewels there. Other attractions include the White Tower, reputedly the most haunted place in Britain, and the famous ravens. Legend has it that without the birds, the Tower and the kingdom would fall. |
