It took over 20 years to build the Tôshô-gû, the great mausoleum complex of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Most of the
buildings are the work of some of Japan’s greatest 17th century artists. Here you can find for example; the Yomei-mon Gate or the Sacred Stable, which is famous for the carving of the three monkeys (hear, speak, see no evil).
Rinnoji- Temple is one of the three largest headquarters of the Tendai sect of Buddism. These and more ( 42 buildings ) can you see, if you go 101 minutes by Tobu-Railways from Tokyo here to Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture.
Tokugawa Shrine was build in 1617. Futarasan-jinja was build in 1619 and Rinno-ji (Rinno Buddhist Temple) was build in 1653. This buildings are now a part from the World Heritage. “Shrines and Temples of Nikko” were registered
in 1999. Unfortunately, the famous Shinkyo (or Sacred Bridge) was under restoration. Shinkyo is one of the three most unusual bridges in Japan. The bridge is the gateway to the temple and shrine area of Nikko City.
